Taijiquan tai chi chuanthus, is a complete martial arts system incorporating the taiji principles rooted in the various manifestations of the two oppositional, yet, at the same time, reciprocal energies - Yin and Yangwhich can be observed, explored, and experienced as the substantial and the insubstantial, the soft and the hard, the fast and the slow, the tense and the relaxed, the expanded and the contracted, the open and the closed, etc.
It was created by Chen Wangting, 9th generation ancestor of the Chen Family. He created taiji as a family art with the intention of passing it to his descendants.
In the United States today, many Taiji practioners have benefited from the teachings of Grandmaster Chen Qingzhou 19th generation direct Chen family descendant from Chen Village and he is highly respected for his lifetime devotion in preserving the Traditional Chen Taijiquan, which is widely known as Zun Gu Taiji "Revere the Ancient Taiji", of the Chen Zhaopi line without modification to its true original form. Tony's Profile. Chat Room.In answering a student question, Master Chen Zhonghua dealt with a higher level skill in Taijiquan practice: connections of body parts and movements. I really enjoyed this video. I find this is a problem I have. This is a very good analogy. The description that Master Chen showed of wuji moving in between Yin and Yang made sense. I realize my concept of Yin and Yang was wrong, it is not necessarily that one is strong and one weak for example, it is that they are opposites.
It seems to be about Yin-Yang separation, the positive circle and the Practical Method, I now see, teaches this. Master Chen, so when doing the final move of the positive circle where the arm rotates and stretches out, there needs to be an opposite sinking and dropping of the left kua and weight into the ground to produce Yin-Yang separation ie.
In regard to Yin and Yang: in the case of a titer totter. One end is doing this to the other end. One end is up while the other end is down. It is yin and yang. It does not mean that piece of board is broken. It does not mean the board becomes disconnected. It does not mean one end is stronger than the other end. In the positive circle 3 counts. The power arm has to be longer than the weight arm in a lever situation.
The above does that. This description of the 3-count positive circle puts a clearer image in my mind to imitate. Thank you. I like the seesaw analogy a lot. The three count description of the positive circle including pivot points is helpful as well.

How shall I say this There are certain fundamental skills and techniques that should be present in the standard taiji weapons forms that are missing from the demo in this video. The long weapons forms are specifically meant to improve core strength and fajin, and are not meant to be a corruption of the bare hands forms.
The staff form is traditionally practiced with a 9-foot long pole for this reason. Martial arts fundamentals of handling a staff should be inherent in the moves. The staff is not a marching band baton. The staff is not a matching band baton. Both the martial arts staff and the marching band baton might be described in physical terms simply as "sticks". To the lay person, the movements of the two "sticks" may seem similar or even identical.
However, what makes the staff different from the marching band baton is that the staff is a weapon.
There are fundamental principles guiding the use of weapons just as there are fundamental principles guiding the Taiji forms. These fundamental principles are meant to make the staff viable in combat. So the proper movements of the staff should show the characteristics of it being a weapon. This is the difference between "simply moving" vs moving with purpose and technique.
The marching band baton has no such requirements and has vastly different fundamental principles so the movements of the staff will therefore be very different then that of the baton. When performing the weapons forms, you should be able to see this power or at the very least, see that the potential for power is available within the person's structure and body mechanics. My contribution - an example of the long pole form that I mentioned, as taught in the Chen Family lineage. It looks really nice.
I find it a bit odd though to have the hands often in the middle or near the middle of the staff. Really as far as I understand the staff is meant to be used with one hand holding one end of the staff and the other hand controlling the direction. It also allows better leverage. Did I miss something? Even for the block after the throw it looks really dangerous from a practical point of view to have the hands exposed so much.

At Daqingshanwe had a purpose built piece of bamboo what looked like Bambusa Old Hamiigreat tool. I have this in my toolbox of exercises. Very interesting options. I built one and have been using it for the last couple of days.
The exercise is much harder than you would think. I had to start out with 2. I find that now if I use the body connection and relax it is much easier. To be able to do 10, 15 or 20 pounds as Master Chen referenced would require very strong internal strength peng energy and will take a while, but I think taking small incremental and consistent steps it is possible.
I built one years ago and used it consitently, got to get back to practicing with this tool. How long should the staff be?

Etymologically, Taijiquan is a fist system based on the dynamic relationship between polarities Yin and Yang. Though originally conceived as a martial artit is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: competitive wrestling in the format of pushing hands tui shoudemonstration competitions and achieving greater longevity.
As a result, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims with differing emphasis. Some training forms of tai chi are especially known for being practiced with relatively slow movements. Today, tai chi has spread worldwide.Wireless forensics
Most modern styles of tai chi trace their development to at least one of the five traditional schools: ChenYangWu HaoWu and Sun. All of the former, in turn, trace their historical origins to Chen Village. The concept of the taiji "supreme ultimate"in contrast with wuji "without ultimate"appears in both Taoist and Confucian Chinese philosophywhere it represents the fusion or mother  of yin and yang into a single ultimate, represented by the taijitu symbol.
Tai chi theory and practice evolved in agreement with many Chinese philosophical principles, including those of Taoism and Confucianism. While tai chi is typified by some for its slow movements, many styles including the three most popular: YangWu and Chen have secondary forms with faster pace. Besides general health benefits and stress management attributed to tai chi training, aspects of traditional Chinese medicine are taught to advanced students in some traditional schools. Some other forms of martial arts require students to wear a uniform during practice. In general, tai chi schools do not require a uniform, but both traditional and modern teachers often advocate loose, comfortable clothing and flat-soled shoes.
